This post has been a looonnngggg time coming (you can see the before pics here). It started when we took the wall down and just wrapped up in it's entirety THIS WEEK -- so ya, it took a while. This was the first 'major' project Rich and I have done together. Ya, we did the dining room, but that was mainly Rich building furniture and me designing and buying things so it was a fast and pretty much stress free project. What about the deck you say? Yes, yes that was definitely a big one, but since it was outside it didn't effect our day to day. The kitchen on the other hand? Ya, it got a little stressful. I mean, ask anyone what room do you spend the most amount of time in and most likely they will say the kitchen, so having ours a bit incomplete for a few months was...frustrating at times.
But the bottom line is we're done, it's AWESOME and it was so worth the wait, Rich's hard work, and my stress/impatience. Is it our dream kitchen? Far from it -all white everrrrrrrything, lol-. But it's brand new, clean, and has a great layout for our small house.
I haven't posted anything since we took the wall down because I wanted to show the whole process with a few little notes along the way...enjoy!
Above is our rendering we did with Home Depot, who was so incredibly easy to work with. We literally plopped ourselves in a seat in the kitchen department and 30 minutes later we were walking out with a 3 week delivery time on the cabinets. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
If I wasn't able to have my white shaker style beaded inset cabinets -what? I know what I want- then dammit, I was definitely getting some open shelving. Originally the plan was for open shelving across the entire wall where the two uppers are pictured, but we decided to just go for some small shelves in between cabinets since we are lacking in sufficient cabinet space as it is and we thought it would be better for the eventual resale of the house, -sigh-.
So in the above pictures we are like....85% done. You will note the wine/beverage fridge which I guess you could say is a total contradiction of my earlier statement of needing more cabinet space but whatevs, it looks cool. You can also get the feel of the more 'open concept' look we were going for with this design. Since the house is so small and we entertain a lot, we just thought it made more sense to have the kitchen and living room be one 'big' space instead of two tiny ones. That's the plywood counter I've mentioned before which was SUPER functional, thanks Rich!
And then there was GRANITE! Probably the most exciting part of the project. We had gotten so used to the plywood and it looked pretty good that I think we may have even said a few times "Who needs granite?" Well the answer was WE DID. What a difference. It took FOREVER to get here after we finally ordered it, but once it was installed...game changer.
The finishing touch was the backsplash which Rich threw up in literally 20 minutes. Have I told you how amazing he is yet? This little detail was something we were beginning to think we could live without being done for a bit longer -- but again, once it was up it just put the cherry on top of this little project.
So ya...that's it! In total we only added five cabinets but they make SUCH A DIFFERENCE! The lazy susan, roll outs, and garbage/recycling style cabinets we chose are beyond functional and along with the wine fridge, really give the kitchen a slightly higher end feel. We are currently on the hunt for the perfect counter stools to compliment both the kitchen and living room, but in the meantime we're enjoying our newest project in its completed form.
