Have you heard of Blue Apron? It's one of the many meal delivery services that have cropped up over the past year or so. We've been using it for over a month and we love it!
I'll be the first to admit, when I saw the commercials or ads online, I didn't really think twice about it as a viable option for us. I knew Rich would probably think it was weird and really, how good could it be? Meals delivered to the door? But then I was scrolling through Instagram one day about 2 months ago, and the Blue Apron feed popped up on my screen, and the food looked good, like really good. So I ventured onto their website and thought that for about $20/meal, why not give it a whirl for a week?
I told Rich about it, and he was less than thrilled but I had already ordered it so whatever -- we would give it a go. The plan I picked for us was the 2 person (obvi) and to get 3 meals per week. I chose Tuesday as my delivery day and waited for my first delivery. When I opened the box it comes in my immediate thought was SHIT -- no way this is enough food. It can be a bit disconcerting at first because everything is prepackaged out to the exact measurements you need to make the dish, so if you're used to going to the store and buying a bushel of asparagus and in your Blue Apron you only get a few stalks it can be a bit....scary, but trust. It's going to work out.
As I picked the meal I was going to make that night (a salmon dish) I was preparing myself mentally for the look of "that's it?" that was probably going to be on Rich's face when I put the dinner in front of him. But as I chopped, measured, zested and diced all of the ingredients according to the recipe card provided, (the prep time is longer than the cook time on most dishes), I started to get excited about this meal I was making. By the time I put it in front of Rich, I was feeling extremely proud about the dinner I was serving, I mean it had GARNISHES for Gods sake!
And the verdict? It was delicious -- and so was the next meal, and the next meal, and the next meal! We're hooked. Ya the portions might seem small but they're not at all. They're actually perfect and made me realize how much we may have been overeating before this! I've learned how to cook so many different things and have even recreated one of the meals for a party of 6 and it came out perfectly!
A Mexican inspired soup we had for Cinco De Mayo....DE-LISH!
The only thing I would caution is that if you are, or you have a super picky eater it might not work for you as some of the recipes might not be to everyones taste. They do let you customize by what you like and don't like when you sign up -- we'll eat anything so we get a plethora of different dishes from all different cultures, which sometimes end up being our favorite of the week!
Bottom line, if you are open to trying new things, I HIGHLY recommend giving it a go. For $20/meal for two people, you really can't beat it!
