Rich and I recently jumped on the high-powered blender bandwagon and invested in a Blendtec. It's an absolute game changer when it comes to recipes and we've been enjoying many, many, MANY smoothies as of late. And while smoothies are fun to create and delicious to drink we wanted to see what else we could make with our new toy. Enter us making our own almond milk.
We started drinking almond milk consistently about a year ago. I was having sharp pains in my stomach and couldn't figure out what was the cause. Before trekking to a doctor, I decided to start to eliminate things from my diet to see if I could determine the culprit myself, the first being regular milk. Well, wouldn't you know that within days of me substituting almond milk for regular milk in my coffee and occasional bowl of cereal, my pains basically disappeared! I couldn't believe it. So from then on out, almond milk it was.
We decided to make our own almond milk after coming across a recipe in the same Tom Brady nutrition guide that we got the avocado ice cream recipe out of. Fair warning....almonds are EXPENSIVE! What gives with that?!? Two pounds of them at Whole Foods cost $4o.00....and it doesn't make that much milk....or last that long (about 4-5 days). BUT BUT BUT...it's delicious and fun (albeit messy) to do.
What you need: 2 pounds of almonds :: A nut bag :: A pinch of Vanilla :: A pinch of Cinnamon :: A pinch of Salt :: 6 cups of Water
How To:
1.) Submerge nuts in room temp water for 2 hours -- after, strain them, discard the water and rinse throughly.
2.) Put the nuts, water, vanilla, cinnamon and salt ( into your *HIGH POWERED* blender and blend for two minutes or until nuts are very fine and water is white and opaque.
3.) Pour mixture (half at a time) into a nut bag (we got ours at Whole Foods) and hold over a large bowl. Working top to bottom, squeeze out the nut milk, like really squeeze...it makes an absolute mess, but I already told you that, and you're this far so keep squeezing!
4.) Transfer your homemade almond milk into a bottle. We have these from Crate & Barrel that work perfectly, plus they totally look the part so I highly recommend.
ENJOY!!!
